There are a variety of technology awards given out ann=

at both NAB (National Association of Broadcasters) and IBC (International B=
roadcasting
Convention). This year’=
s NAB
2010 tradeshow in Las Vegas was business as usual. Prestigious magazines with their s=
mall
army of judges, along with various industry organizations, picked the
NAB’s best products of the year.&nbs=
p;
Several awards were handed out highlighting a variety of hit technol=
ogy
advancements. Attendees found
everything from digital video holograms to miniaturized fiber signal
processors.
“It’s always a devious thrill to find some=
thing
new”, notes Sid Guel, President of Broadcast Automation Consulting an=

tradeshow technology judge.
“Products and technologies that are new, different, creative, =
or
cutting edge, always seems to catch my eye.” Notes Guel.
The broadcast industry waited and wondered how turnout=
at
the tradeshow would be this year, considering the economic climate. The attendance numbers were not as=
high
as previous years, but they fared better than expected.
This year’s NAB ushered in the new era in which
terrestrial, satellite, and cable broadcasters are no longer the only
“kids on the block”.
This year’s NAB brought out a whole new variety of new age dig=
ital
media companies touting broadband products for the internet, mobile, cinema,
digital delivery, digital media broadband networks, IPTV, and many others.<=
span
style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'> Scanning the list of Broadcast
Engineering, NAB, SMPTE, (Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineer=
s)
and SBE (Society of Broadcast Engineers), technology sessions quickly told =
the
story of dramatic change. The
sessions look more like an IT Network, IPTV, Mobile, and Computer Systems
tradeshow, than that of a traditional broadcast industry show.
Nonetheless, our industry has always experienced chang=
e with
a constant annual flow of new technologies and products. Moving broadcasting to digital, ho=
wever,
has been one of the biggest technological changes in our lifetime. “I like to focus on companie=

can look to the future and create new and innovative products that help
broadcasters be more efficient, save money, are more open standard, and imp=
rove
their ON-AIR look.” Notes Guel, “Going digital gets us there mu=

faster than ever before.”
